Campaign of the Month: September 2013
Former slave of Trejack
Crewman aboard The Dashing Stag.
From the area of Urupa.
Illario is a decent shot with a bow, but according to Draiden, is “Thundra dung” with a sword. Stilicho has put him into the ship’s archery group to train with Solara.
Illario is a former slave of Trejack who is from a farming village near Axalalail, which is just West of Urupa. There he had been a farmer’s son who had been captured along with a neighbor while travelling to Axalalail on his way to sell cattle in the city. Trejack took the cattle and the men. Illario was fortunate, for as soon as he and his neighbor were brought on board, a captured Ork liberator adept broke his bonds below decks and began wrecking havoc, resulting in the deaths of two oarsmen and one of Trejack’s men. Instead of being put below with the other slaves, Illario and his neighbor were chained to an oar and made to row the ship. Later on, the ships captain, Jeoffery, complained to Trejack about his lost oarsmen, at which point Trejack gave the two men to Jeoffery as compensation. The two men rowed the boat for several months as slaves. Then one day when the ship was on its way to Urupa, Jeoffery abruptly “freed” the two men, with the restriction that neither could leave the ship. They were unchained, but restricted to remain on the ship. They were given wages, but were forced to pay for their meals as well as room and board, so all of their “wages” went back to Jeoffery. Illario’s neighbor was later caught trying to escape from the ship and was executed by Trejack. Illario felt lucky to be alive and saw no way out, until one fateful day when Trejack and Jeoffery were ambushed by The Unchained and the ship, The Blue Albatross, captured.
Illario was imprisoned and sent to face Throalic justice. Stilicho stood as a witness for him, pointing out that he was enslaved and freed only to serve as an oarsmen, and that several slaves had pointed out Illario’s kindness toward them. Illario was given a much lighter sentence of only a couple of weeks of hard labor. After which he went to the slaves who were staying in an Inn in Bartertown, and apologized to them all. Then he went to Stilicho and asked for help, for he had no place to go, no money, and no prospects for work, and he thought Stlicho was the only good man with power that he had met since his capture by Trejack. Stilicho felt empathy for him, and offered to speak to other airship captains at The Elbow Room, a tavern in Bartertown where airship captains often spend time swapping information. However, with the loss of airship traffic due to the Theran Behemoth blocking the primary airship lane to Throal, very few captains were there and none were looking for crewmen. Stilicho then spoke to the other officers of The Dashing Stag and decided to make Illario a crewman. Stilicho met with Illario at the inn where he and the other freed slaves were staying, and offered him a spot on his ship as long as Illario swore an oath to Stilicho and the officers of the stag, and gave his word to stay with the ship for a year, or until released from duty. Illario agreed, and has since joined the crew of the Dashing Stag.
