The day was over. My back was burning from the lashes that I received. All I wanted to do was head back to the housing area and eat the rat I had caught earlier. When I got there I knew that something was wrong. The tension was thick. Hanna, the only child in the mines, came to me and told me that Aughra wanted to talk to me.
Aughra is a dirty old crone that lies on a mat in the back of the slave area. The crone has always given me the willies so I have always tried to avoid her. As I approached with several other slaves she started to babble on about this large book that she produced from the rags she was wearing. The book was so large I could not believe that she had kept it hidden. It looked old and heavy, looking closer I could see that the pages were made from pounded copper. Aughra looked like she came back to a moment of clarity and started to tell us that she wanted us to take the book back to the dwarven kingdom. That she had failed to get it back there and that she had a vision that we were the ones to get it there. She asked us to promise to return the book. When Vridich, Drmnin, Urgral, and I had agreed to return the book the crone moved faster than she should have. She lashed out with her jagged finger nails and slashed the right arm on each of us drawing blood. She then gashed open her forehead and he chest. Blood was running down the front of her. She was chanting on what sounded like a spell. Then she screamed for us to RUN! A foul wind blew threw the mines. It seemed to come from the old crone as she dies. All the lights went out, all but a small flame on a brand that had been picked up by Luck. I ran to the wood pile and found a couple of pieces of wood that could be used as clubs. I tossed one to Dremnin. I could hear the sounds of monstrous cries of pain and agony. Most of the slaves in the area died from the foul wind, the rest of us made for the mines. We were stopped at the door by the ork guards. They were no longer orks or guards. They looked like there skin had been pealed off. They had to be undead. The group of slaves fell on them like we were a well trained team. The two monsters were beaten down in short order.
Fafnir (a dwarf slave) said that he knew a way out of the mines. We started to follow him. We killed 4 more monsters on the way to the room that the orks stored the elemental earth we have been mining. Fafnir said that we need to dig through a wall in to another chamber. The guys with pick axes started bashing a hole in the wall.
Then we heard a long deep yell and it came in to view. I thought the Ork Taskmaster was big and Ugly before, now he was a true monster. We started in on hit with clubs and axes. Some one in the fray delivered a devastating blow that knocked him to the ground. I used the opening to jump and flip over him to attack from the other side. The battle did not last long and we victorious. Luck took the short sword that the taskmaster carried. He said that he was a trained sword master.
We then entered the new chamber. WATER!!!!!!! The room had several feet of dirty but very wet water. I could not help but wash my dirty body. The bad news was that there was no way out of this room. I knew that I did not trust Fafnir.
The Scream that came from behind me should not have surprised me, but I almost soiled my pants. There was a human woman, Suulin, which had not been with the group to start with at the entrance to the chamber. I could hear the sounds of battle out side. I ran out the door to see Luck and Dremnin in combat with even more undead. I joined the battle defending Dremnins back. That little dwarf is fearless even though he was pretty wounded he stood his ground. The he took a couple of heavy blow from an enraged cadaverman and went down. I moved in to stand over him so that he would not get hit again.
After the battle Vridich helped Dremnin with his wounds. We barricaded the doors with the ore carts and took a minuet to rest. We ate goat meat. It was the first meat we had eaten in months. We cooked two goats to have extra meat for later and made a cover for the book out of one of the goat skins. I used the other to collect about 25lb of raw elemental earth ore. We found a long piece of rope also.
Just when it was nice to be relaxed some one started screaming that the little slave girl Hanna was missing. Dremnin looked totally panicked. He claimed that the girl went in to the water drain in the flooded room. With out warning he dived in after her.
I tied the rope to my waist and gave the other end to Dremnin to tie to something so that I could find my way back. The water was cold. The current was light. It was like swimming in the river at night. The fish had their own light source, they were glowing. I could see why the pale ones find the under earth so attractive. When I caught up to Dremnin he had found the girl. She was not moving. Dremninm was swimming toward a round hole in the ceiling; he swims well for a human. We burst out of the water and Dremnin started trying to get Hanna to breath. Things looked grim; she was almost as blue as I am. Dremnin started to pray to Florannus for a victory in saving the girl. I did not know that he was a fellow follower. I joined in the prayer and we were granted VICTORY!!! PRAISE FLORANNUS!! I danced a jig right there.
But there was no real time to celebrate. We tied off the rope around from around my waist and I dived back in to the water to get Vridich. One because he could help Hanna, the other was because he had the book. I did not want it near Fafnir. Did I mention that I don’t trust him? Then I got the rest of the party a crossed and collected the rope.
When we were all dry, thanks to Vridich, and Hanna felt like she could walk we started down the one hall way. It opened in to a great hall there was a statue of a dwarf and many columns running the length of the hall. There was writing on the columns that turned out to ne the Dirge of Darin Kuyu. Holy crap we just broke in to the unopened Kuyu Kaer. We found the sarcophagus of Darin Kuyu at the other end of the hall. We decided not to open it at the time.
Suulin found a room just off the hall that had robes and belts and a few other goods. We all dressed in the robes and shed our rags. What a wonderful feeling to have clean clothes. We started to look for other supplies. We found what looked like a market. There were stalls that looked like they sold this and that but no weapons or armor.
Then we saw them, tracks. They looked like they went to a large lizard. Dremnin then said that they did not. Urgral then looked at them and gave the bad news. They belonged to a horror. Now we really need to find some weapons.
Next we found what looked like a living quarter. We went through the belongings and found clothing, back packs, belts, knives, and supplies. I found an elven made cloak that is red with fine embroidery.
The sound came as we left the dwelling a low rumbling growl that seemed to penetrate the entire kear. OH do we need weapons. This kinda made the decision for us. We opened the Sarcophagus of Darin Kuyu. It was well made and difficult for us to get the lid off. Just as it slid over the roar came. I have no idea from where. It was so loud. I swear it made the stone under my feet shake. I have never heard the like and hope I never do again. We turned our attention to getting what we could from the dead hero.
As we all know he was a dwarf so all the armor as made for a dwarf. The helm, steel shod boots, and Chain mail went to Urgral. Once he got dressed he looked like a dwarven war lord. I got a war hammer and a sheild. It feels good to have a real weapon in my hand. Suulin got a dagger. I know that a sword came out but I do not know who got it. There were also loads of silver and even some gold coins. Dremnin found the masonry tools that belonged to Darin Kuyu.
