I was in my room below decks. I was trying to teach Saryx how to speak in T’skrang. She had picked up several words and after a short hour she was speaking the new language like an elder. I was surprised by the knock on the door. Most of The Unchained and the crew were off the boat. I opened the door to see Rorik and Stilicho standing in the hall. The troll filled the hall way. I slid out of the room and closed the door so that Rorik could not see the dragon.
Rorik was the last person that I wanted to see. I’m sure he was pissed about my public outburst two days ago. I was mad at the thought that he had come onboard our ship to chastise me. I was ready to blurt out that he could get the hell away from me if he was here to…
“Have I insulted you?” Rorik asked?
I was caught off guard. The statement was not a challenging or accusatory. It was an honest question.
I tried to let go of my anger. “Not directly.” I said.
Rorik took a large breath and let it out slowly, “I know that you do not agree with what I did.”
“What you did was the cruelest thing I have ever seen.” I said.
“I know it was very cruel.” Rorik relied. “Hopefully one day you will understand my actions.” Rorik handed me a small piece of parchment sealed with a small dab of wax. “I was asked to give this to you. Good day.” The troll turned in the small hall way and went back up the stairs. Stilicho gave me a look of confusion, shrugged his shoulders, and then followed Rorik up the stairs.
I was left a little confused by this meeting. Rorik had all the right to be angry with me. I had openly challenged his leadership in front of the whole village. I’m sure If I had been a troll I would have received some kind of punishment.
Not sure what to make of it I looked to the note. I broke the yellow bees wax seal and unfolded the parchment. The language was T’skrang, written in a scrolling female’s hand. I looked to the bottom of the writing. It was written by Fa’ ala. I went back to the top and read the note. Fa’ala was out at the island and wanted to see me. She said that she did not come to me as she was not sure that I would want to see her after what had happened.
I dropped the note on my hammock grabbed my hammer and ran out of the room. I ran all the way to the lake. I could not see her from the lake shore, so I started swimming to the island. I ran around to the west side of the island to the rock beach. There she was.
Her lithe body was laid out on a flat rock sunning herself. She wore only her under clothing and the sun was shining off her red skin. I stood there for a moment and took in the view before I waled out on to the beach. She looked up when my feet disturbed the small rocks of the beach. She jumped to her feet and ran to me. She leaped in to my arms hugged me and held me tight her tail wrapped around my leg. Her body touching mine was a comforting feeling. After a long embrace I pulled away from her so that I could see her face. “What are you doing here?” The words came out with more of an angry tone than I wanted.
She looked hurt like I was going to reject her. She whispered, “I came for you.”
“What if it was not safe? Why would you come back here?” the fear and guilt I had been feeling made my voice harsh.
“Rorik told me that you had made the island and the village safe again. “ She said. Her eyes were starting to water, my heart sank. I am such an ass.
“I meant that I thought you were going to go home to the Nial.” I tried to sound calmer. “I was told that you were taking our child to your mother’s house. Where is the child?”
She smiled wide, “He is over there.” She had made a ring of larger the stone stones and the child was crawling around inside of them. “I think it will be a male by the way that it acts.” T’skrang sex is not decided at hatching but at puberty. I walked over to the makeshift pen and looked down on the child. It was mostly bright green with blue and red stripes running down its back from head to tail tip. “I called him Han.” Fa’ala said.
“That is a good name.” I smiled nodded my head. It was the name of my great grandfather, the Great Han Kray Zomay. I picked up Han and held him close. “The two of you should not stay here. I do not want him to grow up in this crazy troll society.”
“I could take him back to the Nial in the floating city.” She said. “But I do not want him to grow up without you. You will have to spend time with him.”
“I think you should come with us, with me, on the Stag.”
Fa’ala’s face lit up. She was the shining sight of beauty that I remembered. “I would love to but we cannot keep Han from the water to long.”
“That is fine. When you are ready we can take you to the floating city. I have men there that can look after you two. I, well we The Unchained have purchased a river boat that is based out of the floating city. It is being run by Thom and Kang will join him soon.”
“So maybe they will need someone to work on the boat.” She said, you could see the gears working in her mind.
“I think I may be able to pull some strings and get you on.” I smiled. “I’m sure they need someone to swab the decks.”
