The day after I talked to Fafnir about training me in book work I went back to the Great Library to see him. As I walked down the hall to his office I saw a large wheeled cart in front of Fafnirs office with empty crates on it. I walked in to his office to find Fafnir and two younger dwarves packing up his office. There were several crates filled with books and scrolls, as well as the contents of his desk.
I laughed, “Are you packing the entire Great Library?” Fafnir spun around and smiled. I pointed to the two crates filled with scrolls, “We should take those two crates and go to The Stag and pick you out some quarters.” Fafnir started to object, but I cut him off. “These two look like they can handle putting books in boxes, we need to talk about something”, I said. Fafnir looked at me with a confused look. I smilled, “You really want to hear about this.” Fafnir looked at the two younger dwarves, “Pack those shelves first and keep them in order.” We grabbed the two crates and left for the Military Throalic Sky Docks.
Fafnir kept trying to get me to hint at what this was about but I would not talk about it off the ship. We boarded the ship and headed in to the wardroom. We set the crates on the bench and I closed the door. I sat at the table and motioned for Fafnir to sit down. Fafnir could see the seriousness on my face and sat down.
“Old friend”, I started “I know that you have always done right by me and The Unchained, but I have to ask this of you. I have something I have to show you if you are going to travel with us again. It is almost as important as the Book of Tomorrow.” With this statement Fafnir’s Eyes opened wide. “I will need you to swear that you will not talk about it or publish any books or writings on the subject till we know that it is safe to do so.”
“Your secrets are safe with me. I swear that I will keep your secrets.” Fafnir said with a flat but honest tone.
With an assured smile I said, “Good, I was sure that it would not be a problem, but I needed to talk to you about it first. Let’s show you around and find you some where to stay. Then I will show you to Saryx.”
“gem?” Said Fafnir. “What gem could you have that is this important?” Saryx is gem in the elven tongue.
“Oh, it is a gem alright.” I said.
When we got to the lower level I pointed out where Vridich had his room. The smell of burning herbs still lingered at his door. We went by Suulin’s door. “Suulin bought an inn in Barter town so she is not on board.” I explained I pointed out to the open front of the ship. “This is where Dagmar has set up his forge. He is very skilled, very much a master of metal.”
“This is where Urgral, Dremnin and I stay, but you know that as you stayed here too.” I said with a smile. Someone else has taken over as our roommate.” I opened the door. Kor was sitting in my chair when I opened the door. He lifted a finger to his lips. Then pointed to the corner of the room we could not see. I stepped in to let Fafnir follow.
Saryx, the baby dragon, was sleeping in the corner on a pile of blankets and furs we had given her. She was curled up so that she was using her tail as a pillow. The baby dragon that was the size of a small dog was now the size of a wolf hound. Her wings were starting to develop and we were going to have to get her out on to the deck soon so she could start exercising them. But sleeping in the corner she was so beautiful and peaceful.
Fafnir assumed that Kor was Saryx and looked at me with a strange look. I pointed to the corner where the dragon lay. Fafnir turned to look and exclained, “It’s a Dragon!”
Sarxy jumped up, startled from her sleep. She deployed her wings to make her look bigger, dropped her head and hissed. Fafnir jumped behind me with a yelp.
“Saryx!” I said loadly, “is that any way to greet a guest.” As the cloud of sleep left her mind and she saw that it was me, she ran over and wrapped herself around me. Fafnir scrambled over to stand next to Kor. “Saryx, this is my friend Fafnir, he is going to help me with your education.” I said.
She slid off of me curling to the ground and looked the speechless dwarf in the eyes. “Fafffnir”, She said.
